John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose life was characterized by faith, family, integrity, hard work, and a deep love for hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. A proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served as an Electronic Technician before beginning a distinguished career with the Jackson Fire Department. He faithfully served the citizens of Jackson, Mississippi, for 27 years until his retirement.
He was a longtime member of Wynndale Baptist Church and was known for his steady presence, kind heart, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.
In 1962, he married Betty Murphy Manning Speake, and together they built a loving home and shared nearly 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2021. Family was the center of John's life, and he took great pride in his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children, Jerri Byrd (Mike), Mark Manning, Ben Speake (Kathy), and Bobby Speake (Kim); his grandchildren, John Henry Speake, Asa Speake, Alan Manning, and Mason Manning; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty M. Speake.
John will be remembered for his strong faith, quiet strength, love of family, and the example he set through a life well lived. Whether in the woods hunting, on the water fishing, serving his country, protecting his community as a firefighter, attending church, or spending time with family, John found joy in life's simple blessings and shared that joy with those around him.
The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, love, and support shown during this difficult time.
