Ken was born before the Great Depression, but he was literally raised through it. He was one of five children born to Cash and Gracie Hutchinson. His siblings are Cash Jr., Betty, Harold, Doris, and Jim. He was married to Willa Ann Baughn for 63 years. Together their love grew and they had one son, Stephen Carl.
Ken has three grandchildren: Drew, Ryan, and Brett Hutchinson and three great grandchildren: Riley, Matilda, and Nolan Kenneth (his namesake). And a daughter-in-law, Ann.
Ken was good at building relationships, he loved his family of origin and Ann’s family the same. He developed good relationships with his mother-in law Vera Jennings, and sisters-in-law Mickey Capton and Margie Sloan. He had a very special niece Vera Capton, and special nephews, Larry Capton and Rick Capton, John “Skipper” Vanlingin and Frankie Lewis. He loved all of his extended family.
He began working with his family led by his contractor father at the age of 5 constructing houses and structures including Westview Baptist Church on the corner of Raymond Road and McDowell Road extension.
He played football at Forest Hill High School, Hinds Community College, Mississippi State University, and for the U.S. Army. He met Ann Baughn and they dated, he proposed by tying a rope around her waist and attaching it to his truck pulling her along until she said “yes”. He married her around 1950 (?) and he built the house they moved into when they set up house after he left the service.
Ken loved his brothers and they all had ham radio licenses and talked on the radio almost nightly for years.Ken loved restoring things and building structures. He was good at building relationships too. He was a Master Mason and participated in the Eastern Star organization at the Forest Hill Lodge. He and Ann traveled to Blue Grass Festivals and Tennessee Walking Horse Shows.
Ken and Ann loved traveling in their motor home and they visited family in Washington state and California. They actually traveled from the East coast and the Carolinas while he was in the service to the West coast and between after he retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he was a maintenance supervisor. Again, he loved remodeling and restoring post offices across the state of Mississippi.
Ken loved gardening and he and Ann collected daylilies and other native and non-native plants. In their later years together, every morning he would go to their garden and pick flowers for Ann to enjoy with her breakfast. Ken invested in his family, he loved everyone so much. He was a devoted son, a faithful husband, and an amazing Dad and Papaw. Ken was faithful in his prayer life and service to the Lord. He spent nearly an hour every night naming each one of us to our Heavenly Father. We know he covered his life in prayer and he was blessed in this life and we have confidence in Christ that Ken is in heaven with Ann and we will see him again.
A visitation for Kenneth will be held Saturday, December 7, 2024 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 AM.
Kenneth will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Park-South, 430 McClure Rd, Jackson, MS 39212.
