

Kennie B. Ashford was the 10th child born to Arthur and Pecolia Ashford in Choctaw County on July 20, 1935. He departed this life on April 17, 2026. He was proceeded in death by his parents, his wife, Ruthie; his siblings; Edgar, Musetta, Eddie D, Willie Davis, Warnetta, LeMark, Mildred, Levon, Helen, Gladean, and sons Walter and Bobbie; daughters Anita, Della.
At an early age Kennie was baptized and united with the Rockport United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully. Later he joined Big Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Ackerman, MS, and later he joined Mount Moriah MB Church in Louisville where he was a deacon and a member of the adult choir. He enjoyed practicing his favorite pastime, “singing.” Uncle Kennie (as he was called by many) had a great sense of humor, a great work ethic, he was a gentleman and a historian. Uncle Kennie loved to give special “souvenirs” ($2 dollar bills) for birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions. He was proud to be the Chairman and member of the Choctaw County TRIAD Organization. This organization bridges the gaps between the community and the police.
He graduated from Choctaw County Training School in 1954. He was the star athlete for the Ackerman High School basketball and football teams. His nickname was “skinny legs;” but when he played sports; he was the fastest and usually he best member on the team. He once single-handedly scored 34 points in a basketball game against Greenlee school. After the game the opposing team wanted to fight him. He said, “I was the first person on the bus.”
He moved to Chicago and worked various jobs. He landed a job at a subsidiary of the Avon Industry where he worked for many years. In 1986 he married the love of his life, Ruth Jean Hopkins. They were married for 29 years.
Uncle Kennie leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted sister Clara Pearl Henry (Rev. Dr. E. L.), Jackson, MS; son, William Barrett (Linda), Richton Park, IL, special nephews, Gradie Ervin and Howard Ashford (Leandrea), Brandon, MS, Many grand, great-grand and great-great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
Uncle Kennie led an interesting life. He loved his friends, his family, and the community. He never met a stranger. Rest peacefully Uncle Kennie, you have fought a good fight, done your work; and you sang your songs. The Lord knows what pain and joy you have had. He ordered your steps because He knew what was best for you.
