Melvin Leroy Evans, 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 11, 2021. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until service time at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at Raymond Road Baptist Church, 4622 Raymond Rd., Jackson, MS. 39212. Interment at Lakewood Cemetery, on Clinton Blvd. in Clinton, MS. The funeral service will be officiated by Dr. Jim Burnett, past pastor at Raymond Road Baptist Church.
Born on December 26, 1934, in Silver City, Mississippi to James William and Cleo Evelyn Hale Evans. He attended Raymond High School and Hinds Jr. College. He retired after 45+ years at the Illinois Central Railroad as a Master Electrician. He was a Master Mason with the Grand Lodge of Mississippi at Forest Hill. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War. He was a deacon at Parkhill Baptist Church in Jackson, MS and an active member of Raymond Road Baptist Church in Jackson, MS. He was an avid hunter and fisherman with his kids at the “camp” in Valley Park, MS. He loved watching and attending dirt track racing and NASCAR.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Sue Keen Evans, sons Michael (Lisa) Evans of Raymond, MS, Steve (Deanna) Evans of Gilbertsville, KY, Carl (Rebecca) Evans of Brandon, MS, grandchildren, Christopher Evans, Tanner Evans, Tyler Evans, Madison Evans, Patrick Evans, and Courtney Evans.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John David Evans, William James Evans, Kenneth Evans, Max Evans, Van Evans, Raymond Evans, and sister Cleo Evelyn Harrison.
Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons, and Bobby Walker and Nathan Walker.
