Throughout his years, he was known as a man of steady purpose—someone who believed in showing up, doing the work well, and serving others with consistency and care.
Michael graduated from Provine High School in 1964. He continued his education at Hinds Community College and Mississippi College, carrying forward a practical determination that would shape both his public service and his personal life.
From 1966 to 1972, Michael served in the National Guard, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant with the Military Police at the 172nd. In 1967, he began working for the City of Jackson, later also working for the YWCA. His long career in public service culminated in his election as Hinds County Tax Assessor in 1983, a role he held through 2008. Michael served six consecutive terms and retired after decades marked by diligence, reliability, and a deep respect for the responsibilities entrusted to him. He also served as Hinds County Chief Deputy Assessor and as President of the MS Assessor Collectors Association.
Michael’s commitment to discipline and service was evident early on as an Eagle Boy Scout, and it remained a defining thread throughout his life. He was a member of the Southern Sportsman Hunting Club for 40 years, and he found lasting enjoyment in hunting and fishing—pursuits that suited his patient nature and appreciation for time spent outdoors.
Faith and fellowship were also important to Michael. He was a member of Byram Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Jackson, where he participated in the Sam Peoples Sunday School Class and the Reflections Choir for Senior Adults.
