Michael Morgan Mockbee Jr., born April 16, 1945, of Jackson, Mississippi, is remembered with deep respect and gratitude for a life shaped by steadfast devotion to family, enduring friendships, and a sincere regard for the people and places that mattered most to him.
A lifelong-Jacksonian, Mike was educated in the Jackson Public Schools; was graduated from Millsaps College; and was a member of Galloway United Methodist Church. Mike was a proud Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow, devoting significant time to helping others rise through the Boy Scouts. His love of woodworking never faded, as he continued crafting wooden canoes up until his passing. Professionally, Mike was an early adopter of computers, making a successful career as a tech consultant.
In 1966, Mike married Estelle, and together they built a partnership marked by constancy and care. For many years, he and his wife maintained a second home in Fort Morgan, Alabama, a place that became the setting for many cherished weekends and extended vacations—unhurried days that reflected what he valued: time together, familiar rhythms, and the quiet comfort of shared life. Mike was particularly fond of the offshore fishing. With a genuine interest in local and family history, Mike and Estelle also devoted themselves to the restoration and upkeep of Natchez City Cemetery. Mike and Estelle’s commitment to others was perhaps most evident in the steady, behind-the-scenes work he and Estelle carried out for their high school class for 50 years. Serving as the communication center for classmates across the country, they kept updated lists and stayed in touch by email, letters, and phone calls. Always encouraging others, they never missed an opportunity to send books to nephews and great nieces and nephews.
After losing Estelle in 2023, Mike found comfort and renewed joy by traveling to new places and spending many afternoons surrounded by laughter, cold drinks, and his close friends. It is never too late to build a community, and a shared table with friends is one of life’s greatest blessings.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife; his father, Michael M. Mockbee, Sr.; his mother, Amelia Watkins Mockbee; and his son, Michael M. Mockbee, III. He is survived by his brother, David Mockbee (Kathy); and his nephews, Wesley Mockbee (Chelsea) and Cole Mockbee (Ann Collins) and a host of extended family and friends.
A Graveside Service will be held at a later date at Lakewood Memorial Park.
