Robert "Bob" Gerald Howell Sr.

Robert G. (Bob) Howell, Sr, passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on September 11, 2026, at Highland Home in Ridgeland, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents Hubert Ray Howell, Sr., Rebecca Hinson Howell, and his sister, Doris Anne Howell Jones.

Bob was born August 5, 1938, in Florala, Alabama. His family moved to Brookhaven, MS, and then to Jackson, MS., his senior year where he played football and graduated from Central High School in 1956 and then attended Hinds Community College.

He married the love of his life Nancy Ann McLaurin on November 27, 1959. Bob and Nancy met at The Wagon Wheel in Jackson, MS., where their love of dancing began. They were amazing dancers and danced their way through life any chance they got. Bob and Nancy have two children, Robert G. (Bubba) Howell, Jr. and Judith Anne Howell Rogers whom he adored and instilled faith, family, friendship and a strong work ethic.

Bob joined the 114th MP Company of the United States Army of Jackson, MS. and served as a Military Police at Fort Gordon, in Augusta, GA. He then joined the Jackson Police Department and served as a police officer from 1962-1970.

After serving with the Jackson Police Department Bob worked for Andrew Jackson Life Insurance and then joined Southern Farm Bureau as their Director of Training where he retired.

When Bob retired, he worked part-time for Edwin Watts. He loved golf, and you could find him playing at Live Oaks, Annandale or any golf tournament there was. He loved hunting with his son, Bubba, grandsons, Trey and Walker, son-in-law Tim and one of his best friends Ken Ray and sons. Later, one of Ken’s sons, Wesley, would marry his granddaughter, Kristin.

He was the biggest fan of his granddaughter, Kristin, playing soccer, basketball and baseball games for his grandson, Walker, being at every game cheering them on! Their teammates lovingly called him Granddad.

Bob loved the Lord and was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Jackson before moving to Clinton where he became a member of Clinton Methodist Church. While at Clinton Methodist Bob participated in Cursillo and The Walk of Emmaus. Those who knew Bob loved and respected him. He had the most amazing smile, and he was always giving out the best hugs anytime he saw you. He loved being with his family whether it was eating Mexican (which he loved), watching Ole Miss Rebels play football or baseball and of course The Masters Golf Tournament.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy Ann McLaurin Howell, of Brandon, MS., his son Robert G. (Bubba) Howell, Jr. (Lyn) of Brandon, MS., his daughter, Judith Anne (Judy) Rogers (Tim) of Clinton, MS. His grandchildren, Kristin Meeks Ray (Wesley) of Madison, MS., Robert G. (Trey) Howell, III, of Brandon, MS., Patrick Walker Howell (Abbey) of Brandon, MS., Melissa Rogers Bush of Daphne, AL., and Brad Rogers of Oxford, MS. His beloved great grandchildren, Chloe Ray, Hadley Howell, Colton Bush and Jacob Bush. His brother, Hubert Ray Howell, Jr. (Rubie) of Madison, MS., brother-in-law, Duncan McLaurin of Manchester, MO., nephews, Sammy Jones (Jenn) of Myrtle Beach, SC., Jerry Jones (Rena) of Tupelo, MS., niece, Donna Jones Todd (Chris) of Ridgeland, MS., nephew, Jeff Howell (Holly) of Layton, Utah, niece, Angie Howell Neely (Robert) of Madison, MS., great nieces, great nephews, countless friends whom he considered family and his beloved “puppy dog” as he called him, Archie.
