Samuel Morrison Burns

May 17, 1976November 21, 2021

Samuel “Sam” Morrison Burns, 45, born May 17, 1976, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2021. Visitation will be held at Lakewood Funeral Home in Jackson, MS, on November 26, 2021, at 2:00 PM, with the service immediately following at 3:00 PM. Sam was loved by many; he had a unique intuition for knowing when to reach out to friends and family in need at just the right time and offering help and support to them. He had 18 years of sobriety that he was very proud of; he used his own history, mistakes, and triumphs to encourage, mentor and aid many others on their own road to recovery. Sam was a lover of comic books, making a comic book store the perfect place to volunteer his time for 20+ years. Sam earned the nickname “Superman” by emulating his favorite superhero in the eyes of his loved ones; he was even often seen sporting a super “S” t-shirt. Due to his own creativity, building custom figures, he met many creative types. To his utmost delight, one of these encounters led to him being depicted as a comic book character named Samhain. He loved his cat, Loogie, like a son and had a lifetime passion for horses. He immensely enjoyed all types of music, from the song “It’s Raining Men” to Jimmy Buffet to Five Finger Death Punch. Sam cherished his family tremendously and was incredibly close to his beloved mother and younger brother. At a very young age, Sam showed that he had a great sense of humor, once telling a teacher that he loved it when it snowed because he could write his name in it. Even while ill, his brilliant dry wit persisted as he said to his brother, “I’m sick, not stupid,” when asked his name. Sam will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Sam was preceded in death by his mother, Genie Burns, and niece, Lexi Johnston.

He is survived by his father, Barry Burns; brother, Daniel Burns (Kelly); nephew, Ethan Johnston; aunt, Ruth Ann Rigby (Jody); uncles, George Glenn (Debbie), Robert Burns (Gwen), David Burns (Susan); numerous cousins and a multitude of friends.

A visitation for Samuel will be held Friday, November 26, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Lakewood Funeral Home, 6011 Clinton Blvd, Jackson, Mississippi 39209, followed by a memorial service at 3:00 PM.

Met Sam when we were 14-year-old unruly kids, He was my roommate for the last year and a half almost. The best friend and brother from another mother I've ever had. Out of all the deaths I've experienced and funerals i have preached this one hit me the hardest. But he asked me to do it if he passed before me so i was honored. Fly high brother, I'll see you soon.

I met Sam the same way so many other people did, at the Comic Shop. After several visits we became friends talking about our interests we had in common. That friendship has continued on for 25 years. He loved movies, music, and books., but more than that he loved his family and friends. He took in strays and made them part of his life. He was always there when you were in need. I always thought we had plenty of time. Sam my friend my brother from another mother; “How I wish, how I wish you were here.”

I told Sam once, when we first met I thought he wanted to punch me, he laughed, but it’s indicative of all the best relationships I’ve had with people. If there was any kind of tension upon meeting that person usually became somewhat of a fixture in my life. I am grateful that was the case with Sam. He was the epitome of friendship for fifteen years, and that friendship means the world to me. I miss ya, buddy. Rest.

Sam was such a great friend to many and loved by all. I will never forget a time that he helped me when I was in need. He had the biggest heart!

I know he’s happy to be with Genie now. He never got over losing her.
Prayers to you all.
I will forever miss hearing him say “Hey Darlin”
