Tom was born in Laurel, Mississippi to James Henry and Thelma Freeman Hunt. He graduated from high school in Laurel, where he also earned his Eagle Scout badge. In his youth Tom worked for Fine Brothers department store. The owner there, Mr. Fine, had a great influence on Tom’s furthered education.
He received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Mississippi College and remained an avid supporter of the school for many years. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving as a chaplain’s assistant during the Korean War.
Tom taught school in Wauchula, Florida, where he met his wife Jean. After marriage, they returned to Mississippi, where he taught school at Murrah High School in Jackson. Later on he left Murrah and went to work for Science Research Associates selling textbooks and reading labs to schools around the state. He retired as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Mead Johnson Pharmaceuticals.
Tom was a long-time member of Northside Baptist Church in Clinton. He served faithfully as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. He was also a member of the Clinton Lions Club.
Tom lived a quiet life, with few wants. He loved reading, walking out in nature, gardening, and most importantly, a good meal. More than anything, though, Tom enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Being a granddaddy was his greatest joy. He was a man of steadfast faith who lived his life ready to meet Jesus.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Daniel Hunt, his brother James W Hunt, his sister Peggy Pendarvis and his sister-in-law Ida Catherine Pierce.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Hunt, his children Ray and Dee Hunt, Meg and Mike Bartlett, his grandson Matthew Tucker, his sister Mamie Lou Lyon and his nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 6th at Northside Baptist Church, 1475 E. Northside Dr., Clinton, Mississippi from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM with the funeral service immediately following at 12:00 PM. He will be buried at Lakewood Memorial Park immediately following the service.
Memorial donations may be made to Northside Baptist Church or to the Clinton Community Christian Corporation (4 C’s).
