A private Funeral Mass was held on October 14, 2021, at Holy Savior Catholic Church, Clinton, Mississippi. Interment followed at Lakewood Memorial Cemetery.
Bill Spell was born November 22, 1925, in Georgetown, Mississippi, the first child of the late Albert and Vesta Walters Spell.
He graduated from Georgetown High School in April 1944 and departed immediately for military service in the United States Army Air Corps.
He was discharged in May 1946 and entered Mississippi College in the Fall, graduating in 1950.
In 1962, he graduated from the Jackson School of Law, now the Mississippi College Law School.
During his professional career, he served as a radio announcer, newspaper reporter, trade association executive, Staff Assistant to Senator John Stennis, an advertising executive and, after 1975, engaged in private law practice.
In 1949 he joined the Mississippi National Guard as a Second Lieutenant. In 1964, he transferred to the United States Air Force Reserve and was assigned to the staff of the Commander of Air Force Systems Command at Andrews Air Force Base, where he served until retiring from the military in 1972, having reached the rank of Colonel.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Hughleen Statham Spell, a sister Mary Lois Spell who died in infancy, a brother B.G. Spell, M.D., and a sister Beebee Spell Akin.
He is survived by his wife Donna Kalland Spell and five children: William E. Spell, Jr., Jan Spell Chisolm, Robert Spell, Laura Spell Reagan and Julie Spell Cross; 14 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
