Winifred, also known as Winnie to many of her friends, was born on December 2, 1933, in Meridian, MS. She was the daughter of Jasper (Jack) E. Walker and Grace Nelson Walker. She grew up in Jackson, MS and was a graduate of Central High School, where she was the majorette in the band. While in high school, and in the early years after, she and her sister Virginia, were known as the "Walker Sisters" and would entertain at social events throughout Jackson and the surrounding area playing the accordion. She was always incredibly musically talented and could sit at any piano and always "play by ear". While working at an insurance company in Jackson, she met and married her lifelong soulmate, Sam Walter Wright.
Winifred and Sam moved to Clinton, MS, in 1966, where they dedicated their life to raising their two sons, Sam and Jack. Winifred worked as her husband Sam's office manager in the insurance business until his retirement. She then opened "Winifred's Antiques" where she became known for having some of the finest antique furniture in the Jackson area.
Upon her husband Sam's retirement and illness, she began working as an administrative assistant at The University of Mississippi Medical Center Psychiatry Department, where she proudly worked for 18 years until her retirement at the young age of 77. She then lived her remaining years enjoying her glass and antique collecting, spending time with her family, and especially her grandsons Nelson, Alex and Ian. No matter what city they were living in, they knew she would be coming. To her grandchildren, she was affectionally known as “Grandmer”. She created countless wonderful family memories which will last and be cherished forever in the hearts and minds of her family and friends.
She spent her final years as a resident of The Blake in Ridgeland, MS, where she was also loved as family, until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Grace Walker, her sister Virginia Walker McClellan, and her husband Sam Walter Wright. She is survived by her two sons, Sam Walker Wright (Cindy) of Madison and Jack Glenn Wright (Bari) of Madison. She has three loving grandsons of which she could not be more proud Jack Nelson Wright of Madison, Alexander Allen Wright (Sarah) of Colorado Springs, and Ian Walker Wright of Vicksburg. She also has a loving extended family of Zach Longgrear (Clancy) and Sage Schmidt (Parker) of Madison.
