

Charles was born November 5, 1931 in Bemis, TN to the late Coy Franklin Garrett and Frances Wiley Garrett. He grew up in Malesus and graduated from Malesus High School and attended Lambuth College. He married Patsy Davis Garrett in 1953 and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary January 10, 2013. Charles founded Garrett Plumbing and Heating Company in 1955, in his garage on Royal Street. He built the company by focusing on quality workmanship and service to his customers. Charles always considered his employees and customers a part of his extended family.
Charles had a love for flying and airplanes and enjoyed attending air shows and flying with friends. He served in the National Guard 14 years. He spent many summers at the Tennessee River, fishing and spending time with family and friends.
He was a devoted member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years where he served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, youth leader and was a member of the building committee for the church’s current location. He supported the mission of Camp Clark Williamson and participated in the development of the new lodge.
Other pastimes included gardening and attending his grandchildren’s sporting, dance and other events. He was a member of the North Side Lions Club and the Jackson Exchange Club, where he was proud to be a part of the “wise” table and its record of predicting Miss Tennessee winners.
In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his brothers Douglas, Coy, Jr., Jim, Bill, Bob, sisters Frances and Carolyn.
Surviving are his wife, Patsy Davis Garrett, daughters Diane Garrett Johnson (Mike), Charlotte Garrett Shivley (Preston), Julie Garrett Ross, (Neill) and son Charles Alvin Garrett, II (Cathy). Charles also leaves eight grandchildren, Hailey Johnson Eldridge (Michael), Clark Preston “Trell” Shivley, III (Anna), William Garrett Johnson (Elizabeth), Ryan Neill Ross, Charles Landon Shivley, Hillary Garrett Ross, Anna Catherine Garrett, Charles Alexander Garrett, two great-grandchildren, Garrett Michael Eldridge, Ella Hall Eldridge, a sister, Glenda Garrett Hays (Maurice) and a special nephew, William E. Garrett, II and niece, Suzanne Garrett Rhea.
Services for Charles Garrett will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Terry Hunley officiating. The family requests that employees of Garrett Plumbing please be seated together. Pallbearers will be Trell Shivley, Will Johnson, Ryan Ross, Landon Shivley, Alex Garrett, Michael and Garrett Eldridge. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Chance, Joe Demarco, Bill Garrett, Charles Giles, Mike Hanaford, Nathan Johnson, Jessie Jones, Johnny Parnell, John Powell, Jimmy Smith, Johnny Tims, Bob Wallace, Peggy Ward, Bill and Elaine Woods. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. The family has requested that lasting memorials be directed to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
