Dr. Pakis was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on March 1, 1927. He was the son of the late Marie Lillian Hinkle and George Pakis, Sr. He grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, and was educated in the public schools and graduated from Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon, Tennessee in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy from June 1944 – July 1945. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
Following his military service, Dr. Pakis entered the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he earned a B.S. in Arts and Science. In 1950, he entered the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in Little Rock and graduated with his Medical Doctorate in 1954. Dr. Pakis interned at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas and completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Arkansas Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas and came to the Jackson Clinic in 1959 as a practicing OB-GYN. Dr. Pakis worked at the Jackson Clinic for 43 years, where he delivered an estimated 7,000 babies, until his retirement in 2002.
On June 14, 1951, he married the love of his life and his best friend, Mary Jane Coleman. To this union were born three sons, Glen, Greg, and Dean.. George and Mary Jane were longtime, dedicated parishioners of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Mary Jane preceded him in death in 2013.
In addition to His wife, George was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Pakis of Hot Springs, Arkansas; his sister, Mary Frances Stonecipher of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and his brother, William Pakis of Waco, Texas.
George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved playing golf with his friends and his sons, and was a member of Jackson Country Club for over 50 years. George was also an avid gardener, a dedicated reader, and enjoyed watching sports like football and golf.
He is survived by his sons, Glen Pakis and wife Sharon of Franklin, Tennessee; Greg Pakis of Lexington, Kentucky ; and Dean Pakis and wife Laurie of Germantown, Tennessee; as well as three grandchildren, Claire Pakis, Tony Pakis, and Alex Pakis.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Thursday, May 13, 2021 from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. in The Commons of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. in the Nave of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with Fr. Jeffrey Samuel, Priest-In-Charge, officiating. The interment will be held privately before the service at Ridgecrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 309 E. Baltimore St., Jackson, Tennessee 38301.
