Maggie Nell was born in Martin, Tennessee to Harold and Delta Campbell Brewer. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gerald, and sister Imogene Brewer Jones.
An alumna of J.B. Young High School, the University of Tennessee, and George Peabody College, Dr. Brewer pursued additional studies at the University of Tennessee-Martin and Memphis State University.
Her teaching career began at J.B. Young High School and, subsequently, South Side High School. She became supervisor of instruction for the Madison County School System before beginning a 30-year tenure at Union University. She retired as vice president of student affairs.
She influenced thousands of students by teaching that those with courage, patience, and heart could accomplish anything. Her life and career also demonstrated that talented women should always have a place at the table.
Dr. Brewer was an avid adventurer who traveled the world experiencing life to the fullest. Her servant’s heart led her to the mission field in Brazil and at home, alongside her lifelong friend, Clara Lynn Williams, and other fellow Christians. Her memory will live in the hearts of friends at her beloved church, Madison Baptist, in the Madison Hall Community.
Survivors include five nieces and nephews, eight grandnieces and nephews, and two great-grandnieces.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Saturday, October 15, 2022 from 9-11 a.m. at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with Bro. Greg Gilbreath of Madison Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.
For those wishing, Dr. Brewer's request was that memorials in her memory be sent to Madison Baptist Church or Union University.
