

Dr. Mary Emma Steadman Floyd, age 84, of Jackson, Tennessee, died Wednesday, May 15, 2013.
The daughter of the late Mr. John Ralph and Mrs. Hazel A. Steadman of Selmer, Tennessee, Mary Emma was preceded in death by her husband Bryant Floyd of Jackson and her sister, Marjorie Murdaugh also of Jackson. Surviving Mary Emma are her sister Virginia Byrum (Jessie), her daughter, Melissa Floyd, both of Jackson, and her son, Mark Floyd (Anne Byrn), of Nashville and her five grandchildren.
Mary Emma was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and, prior to that, of Forest Heights United Methodist Church, both in Jackson. Mary Emma received her Bachelor's Degree from Lambuth College, and her Master's and EdD in educational counseling and psychology from University of Memphis. Mary Emma worked more than 40 years in education including 20 plus years in the Jackson school system as a teacher, and middle school/elementary guidance counselor. In addition to her work in education, Mary Emma, along with her husband, owned the Alpine Christmas and Gift shop in Jackson for over 18 years.
The funeral service will be held on May 18, 2013 at 3:00 PM in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home. A committal service will follow at 5:00 PM at Oak Hill Cemetery in Selmer, Tennessee.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions be made in her memory to the Redemption Road Equine Rescue at P.O. Box 85, Oakfield, TN 38362.
