Idell Crawford Tapp passed away peacefully on Jan 17, 2020 at Humboldt AHC, Skilled Nursing Facility. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday January 21, 2020 at 3:00 pm in the North chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Dr. Justin Wainscott officiating the service.
She was born to the late Robert Charles & Evelyn M. Crawford in Huntingdon, West Virginia on Sept. 2, 1928.
She was raised in Memphis, TN and graduated from Memphis Technical School in 1946, with honors.
She met the love of her life, Gerald La Vaughn (Von) Tapp and they were married on June 25, 1949 by Dr. Robert G Lee, at Bellevue Baptist Church in Memphis, where Idell was a Beginner & Primary Sunday School Teacher.
Idell and Von (aka G. L Tapp) moved to Jackson, TN in 1958 when he relocated his business, Challenger Manufacturing Co. Idell was a homemaker and stay at home mom to her daughter, Glenda.
She loved to read recipe books and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. The family became members of The First Baptist Church in Jackson where Idell taught the young married class in the early 60's, was the Director of Bible School and The Girls Auxiliary in the 60's and 70's. She volunteered as a Gray Lady at JMCGH and served through the years as school room mother and president of the PTA.
Von & Idell opened J's Steakhouse on Highland Ave in the mid to late 60's. They went on to open R.V. Sales, selling travel trailers and motor homes and eventually becoming a John Deere dealer.
In 1987, Idell started working at Lemstone Christian Bookstore, in the Mall, and worked there until the stores closing in 2005.
Idell is survived by her daughter, Glenda Tapp Hodge and grandson, Harrison Tapp Hodge and wife Dana Byrd Hodge. She was predeceased by husband Von, in 1988, her parents, her brother Charles Crawford, and her grandson Hunter Brian Hodge in 2012.
The family would like to thank TN Quality Care Hospice for their loving care and especially to their Chaplin, Mr. Dennis Clough, and to their pastor at FBC, Dr. Justin Wainscott.
Entombment will be on Thursday January 23, 2020 at Memorial Park Cemetery next to her husband and parents who preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2:00 pm until the time of the service at 3:00 pm in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons
