Gary retired from Southwest Tennessee Electric in 2000 and was a member of West Jackson Baptist Church. He was a member and officer in numerous civic organizations, primarily Al Chymia Shrine and The American Legion. He was also a member of St. John's Masonic Lodge #332. He also served in the National Guard. After retiring, he worked part time at Bobby Green's Auto. He was married to the love of his life, Lurline, for 57 years.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Scates.
He is survived by his wife, Lurline Scates; three daughters, Michelle Scates, Tina Spicer, and Chris Williams (Doug); grandchildren, Brittany Spicer, Hannah Spicer, Dillon Williams, Justin Williams, and Haley Williams; and two great grandchildren, Paisley Williams and Kameron Gilbert.
The family will receive friends and loved ones on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.
