

Born on March 30, 1944, in Jackson, Tennessee, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph Varnell Jr. and Vaughn Lee Varnell. He was a proud graduate of Jackson High School, Class of 1962, and continued his education at Union University, where he earned a degree in Spanish and Secondary Education in 1966.
Joseph began his career as a Spanish teacher, sharing his love of language with students in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Charleston, Missouri. He later answered the call to serve his country, serving first in the United States Navy and later in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, Joseph worked in retail with Kroger, where he remained until his retirement.
An avid reader throughout his life, Joseph had a deep appreciation for history and was especially fascinated by the British royal family. He was known for his intelligence, quiet nature, and lifelong curiosity about the world around him.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Varnell.
He leaves behind his loving family, including his sister, Elizabeth Deaton; his nephews, Damon Perry Deaton (Elaine), Jason Varnell Deaton, and Michael Varnell; his niece, MaryAnna Snider (Cory); his great-nephews, Eli Watson Snider, James “Jay” Milton Snider, Clint Alexander Deaton, and Nate Deaton; his great-niece, Cicely Deaton; and his sister-in-law, Mary Varnell. He also leaves many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
A memorial service celebrating Joseph’s life will be held at a later date at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Jackson, Tennessee. Service details will be announced by the family when they become available.
Joseph’s life was marked by a love of learning, dedicated service to his country, and devotion to his family. He will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew him.
