Phillip Dee Scott, teacher, coach, local author, and avid reader, age 70, of Jackson, passed away on November 29, 2018 at his home after a short illness. In keeping with his wishes, his remains were donated to the University of Tennessee for the furtherance of medical research.
Phillip was born on March 4, 1948 in Jackson, TN to the late S.D. Scott Jr., from Jackson, TN, and Dorothy Jones Scott, from London, England. Phillip attended Madison County Schools except for 3 intervals. In 1956, he went to school in Derby, England, for a year, and in 1957, he attended schools in Plainview, Texas, and Palo Alto, California for a short time, moving from Malesus Elementary to South Side High School where he graduated in 1966. He attended Lambuth College and graduated in the spring of 1970 with a B.S Degree and a double major in math and history. He attended Memphis State University for several years in the 70's and received a Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision in 1975. Phillip taught and coached in the public schools of Tennessee, Missouri, and Mississippi. He officially retired in 2000, but continued to teach on one-year retired teacher contracts.Phillip was the author of three non-fiction books, most notably, "Rock and a Hard Place" the story of the 1951 Bemis Cotton Mill strike and the murder of Lowell Simmons. He also wrote a fictional series of murder mysteries set in Bemis, TN. Phillip enjoyed vacations with family. He loved UT football and Atlanta Braves baseball. He loved sculpting and painting miniature soldiers and other figures. An avid reader and writer, he entertained and offended many people all over the country with his liberal views.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Karen Kennon Scott of Jackson; son, Jonathan Scott (Elaine) of Jackson; grandsons, David and Skyler Scott, a brother, Lance Scott (Judy) of Jackson, brother-in-law, Kenneth Roe (Clara,) sisters-in-law Cindy Murphy, (Tom), Brenda Griffith (Alan), and Lisa Rodriguez (Bret,) and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved pets, all rescues, three dogs and two cats.
