

Born on October 13, 1928, near Lavinia, Tennessee, Sue attended school in Lavinia before graduating from Milan High School. She continued her education at Union University earning her Bachelor’s Degree and Memphis State University, where she earned her Master’s Degree, preparing for a lifelong career in education.
Sue dedicated many years to teaching, first in Lavinia and later at Alexander Elementary School in Jackson. She had a genuine love for children and believed deeply in the value of education, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless students throughout her career.
A woman of strong faith, Sue was a longtime member of West Jackson Baptist Church. She was also an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Retired Teachers Association, where she enjoyed the fellowship of lifelong friends and fellow educators.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Esther McLemore; her brother, J.W. Maynard; her sister, Carolyn Patton; her beloved husband, Everett Utley; and her son, Alan Utley.
She is survived by her son, Mark Utley (Suzanne); and a host of extended family members, former students, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Sue will be remembered for her unwavering faith, gentle spirit, dedication to education, and the kindness she extended to everyone she met. Through her years in the classroom, she helped shape generations of young lives, and through her life of service, she left an enduring legacy of compassion, wisdom, and love.
A service to celebrate the life of Sue Utley will be held on Monday, June 29, 2026 at 11 a.m. at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Bro. Lonnie Sanders of West Jackson Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will begin receiving friends at 10 a.m., one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, Ms. Utley requested that memorial donations be made to the Music Ministry of West Jackson Baptist Church.
