OBITUARY
Thomas Leeowen Acuff
October 13, 1922 – May 26, 2011
Funeral Services for Thomas Leeowen Acuff, age 88, will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 10 a.m., at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel, with Dr. David Dockery officiating. Burial will follow in the Providence Cemetery.
Mr. Acuff was a long time member of Lambuth Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was a past Sunday School President, Sunday School Treasurer, and was a Member of the Board.
Mr. Acuff served both his community and country throughout his career in Law Enforcement and the Military. During his Military Career, which spanned from 1942 until 1992, he served in the Army in World War II, serving in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany until the end of the war, he was an active reserve called back into Active Service during the Korean War, was in the Tennessee National Guard, Army Reserve Intelligence Unit, and with the Tennessee Defense Force, where he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. His Law Enforcement Career began in 1946 with the Madison County Sheriff's Department, where he worked until departing in 1948 to join the Jackson Police Department. During his time with the Jackson Police Department, he was promoted to Sergeant in 1959, Lieutenant in 1969, and Captain in 1972 until his retirement in 1989.
His commitment to his community was also shown through his involvement with many of our local organizations, spanning from the V.F.W. Post 1848 to the American Legion #12, F.O.P., the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, the Jackson Police Association, Tennessee-Mississippi Sheriff and Peace Officers Association, Tennessee Law Enforcement and Officers Association, and the Jackson Police Retirement Association.
Mr. Acuff is survived by a daughter, B. Zangara Holmes and husband Jack; grandchildren, Joshua Holmes and wife Kristie, Sara Tellado and husband Antonio, Jacob Holmes and wife Mandy, Cheryl Massengill; eight great- grandchildren and dear friend, Dean Jacobs.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mary Dunn Acuff and one daughter, Rosemary Massengill.
Visitation with the Acuff Family will be on Friday, May 27, 2011 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., at George A. Smith and Sons North Chapel.
