Virginia E. Haayer

Virginia Elaine Haayer, 84, of Jackson, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at Jackson General Hospital. Born on December 16, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, Virginia grew up on the North Side of the city, where her spirited personality and love for people first began to shine.

Over the years, Virginia became the proud mother of five children. She worked for many years as a custodian at an elementary school, dedicating herself to creating a welcoming environment for students and staff. After moving to Tennessee with her late husband, Otto, the two built a beloved local business—Virgi’s Hot Dogs, a cheerful stand outside the local Lowe’s that became a community favorite. Later, Virginia continued her service to children as a school bus aide for the Jackson County School District, where her kindness and humor made her a bright spot in many students’ days.

Virginia never met a stranger she didn’t befriend. Her social nature, warm smile, and easy laughter made her unforgettable to everyone she encountered. She loved her coffee, embraced the spice of life, and found joy in collecting anything and everything Christmas. Her home reflected her festive spirit year round, filled with decorations that brought delight to her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her mother Ann, stepfather Walter, brother Anthony, son Charles, and her beloved husband Otto.

She is survived by her children Tim, Mark, Allen, and Ange; and her grandchildren Taylor, Ange, Anthony, Abby, Alyssa, Alex, and Madalynn. Each of them carries forward her love, strength, and joyful spirit.

Services will be held on August 15 at George A. Smith & Sons Funeral Home, located at 2812 North Highland, Jackson, TN, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, Virginia requested that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, a cause close to her heart.

Her memory will forever live on in the stories she shared, the friendships she formed, and the love she gave so freely.
