Wonnell was born on February 28, 1933 in Jackson, TN to the late Arle and Louise Warren. She graduated from J.B. Young High School in 1952. She married Delton Meals in Corinth, MS and they were married for 66 years until his death in 2019. Wonnell was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Bemis where she taught in the Primary and Junior Departments for 23 years. She and her friend Sara started the tradition of putting out poinsettia and decorating the church for Christmas.
Wonnell worked as a Medical Assistant for Dr. Tucker in Bemis and at the Urology Clinic. She volunteered for the Red Cross for 12+ years taking blood pressures at the Bemis Center mostly for church members. Her ministry was sending cards to seniors, children, and to anyone that needed a lift. She enjoyed crafts, especially making Santa Clauses in ceramics.
She is survived by her son, Philip Meals (Tina); daughter, Darlene Meals Freeman (David); grandchildren, Richard Meals (Deanna), Paul Meals (Leslie), Drew Freeman (Ashley), Tyler Freeman (Bri); great grandchildren, Tanner Meals, Camden Meals, Rachel Meals, Emma Freeman, Zoe Freeman, Elsie Freeman, Emerie Freeman; and her sister, Pat Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delton Meals; parents, Arle and Louise Warren; and brothers, Howard and Pete Warren.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Wonnell will be held on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 1 p.m. at the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Bro. John R. Gaters of First Baptist Church Bemis officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends beginning at 11 a.m., two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
