Also, two grandchildren, Jordan and Andrew Winters and nine step-grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his younger brother, Nelson S. Winters.
Al was born on September 28, 1922 in New Haven, Connecticut to Charles Winters and Molly Wasserman. He graduated from Hillhouse High School there and soon after, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps to serve his country in WWII. He served proudly and honorably in the Pacific and bravely fought with the Fifth Marine Division on Iwo Jima during the 36 days of that terrible battle. He returned safely to raise a family in the New Haven area, moving through several jobs, retail and wholesale sales, most notably, selling toys for the Harold Hahn Co. in North Haven, Connecticut.
Al and Dorothy (Dottie) Soucy were married on August 23, 1969 and lived in Bristol, Connecticut until moving to Jacksonville, Florida in 1973. He loved his family dearly and took great pride and joy in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Second only to his family, he loved the Marine Corps. It was an endless source of pride and he never tired of meeting new Marines and swapping stories. He was an active member of the Marine Corps League in Jacksonville, shared his experiences freely with junior ROTC groups in the area and was a familiar sight at parades and fund-raising events.
He had a long and eventful life enjoying relatively good health and had an extraordinary will to live. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.
