Alice McCall Rogers, 93, passed away Monday, November 6, 2017, in Jacksonville, FL. The first of 12 children, she was born August 27, 1924 in Darlington, SC, to Willie C. McCall and Lawson W. McCall (née Williams). After attending Mayo High School, she married James G. Rogers and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There she became a pharmacy clerk and later a massage therapist. Most of her years of employment were spent as a Printer’s Assistant.
Alice was truly passionate about flowers and loved to spend her time gardening. As a dedicated homemaker, she particularly excelled in cooking. Macaroni and cheese was one of her specialties and her recipe remains a treasured holiday favorite for the family. As an avid music enthusiast she could rarely hear a song without tapping her toes or bobbing her head, especially if it was jazz or the vocal stylings of Nat King Cole or Josh Groban. A devout Catholic, she attended services until her failing health prevented her from doing so. Even then, she continued in her daily prayers to our Lord, and to her special intercessors St. Anthony and St. Jude. “Aunt Alice,” as many called her, was never one to miss a family milestone or special occasion – if she couldn’t attend in person, she made sure her loved ones sent or brought photographs to her (and the more the better!). She collected and displayed her countless pictures and was never so proud as when she was showing them off and telling stories about all that her loved ones had accomplished.
In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Rogers; her brothers: Robert “Sonny” C. McCall, Billy C. McCall, Lawson “William” W. McCall, and Coleman “Dick” R. McCall; and most recently her sister, Willa “Babe” Blake.
As matriarch, Alice will be forever remembered by a host of cherished family and friends, including: her six surviving sisters, Mattie A. McCall, Mae “Bea” Hodges, Hester “Tingy” O. White, Victoria Joyce Henderson (James), Lillian Robinson, and Betty Jo McCall; her sister-in-law, Ethel Rogers Mitchell; her four children, Johnnie Patricia McCall, Daniel Gydus Rogers (Ernestine), A. Faye Rogers-Lomax (Michael), Jacqueline Rogers Fallgatter (Curtis); her five grandchildren, Jason Rogers (Felisha), Lauren Lomax Gordon (Bradley), Colby Fallgatter Roberts (Joseph), Whitney Lomax, and Kyle Fallgatter (Laura); and her 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will take place at Holy Family Catholic Church, Jacksonville, FL, on Friday, November, 10, 2017, with burial to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, Jacksonville, FL.
