Allan (Doc Al) Schonberg, M.D. passed away peacefully after a prolonged and heroic battle with multiple ailments which had robbed him of his energy, joyousness, and mobility. Born to Lilllian and Joseph Schonberg of Brooklyn, New York on November 7, 1945; he was the youngest of three sons. His oldest brother, Kenneth is a physician in the Bronx, New York, and his second brother, Edward, who predeceased him by 5 years, spent a career as a teacher in the New York City School System.
Reared in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn, Allan was educated in the New York City Public Schools and attended Sheepshead Bay High School where he was an excellent student and a member of the Varsity Soccer Team. He enrolled at Bethany College in West Virginia where he majored in Biology and received a B.S., then went on to earn a Masters Degree in Biology at the University of the State of New York in Buffalo. Upon completion of his graduate studies he accepted a position as a science teacher in the New York City school system. After two years of teaching he applied to and was accepted at the Medical School at the University of Arkansas. In his third year of medical school he transferred to George Washington University where he went on to earn his M.D. After completing medical school he was accepted into the Internal Medicine Training Program at the University Hospital in Jacksonville. He completed his training in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Cardiology and entered private practice in Jacksonville – a career he maintained for nearly forty years until failing health forced him to curtail his activities.
He is remembered as loving life; always joyous and animated; and a devotee of playing and watching sports. Known throughout his life by his relatives as “The Shortstop” – a reference to his baseball playing excellence as an adolescent and young man - he spent his later years finding other ways to be involved in competitive sports. He held season’s tickets to the Jacksonville Jaguars and was a diehard fan. He was a part owner of the Jacksonville Barracudas hockey franchise. He always found time to coach his son, Chad and others in youth soccer. He will be missed most for his energy and sheer enjoyment of friends and family and life.
He is survived by his eldest brother, Kenneth, of New York; his first wife, Brenda Schonberg (nee Korcykoski) now of Cleveland, Ohio; his son, Chad of Florida; his step-son, Chris of Florida; his daughter, Dorothy and her husband, David Decourcey and their three children, Evan, Noah and Lily, who brought bragging and sunshine into his final years; and his wife, Colleen who cared for him with dedication and love during his prolonged battle with disabilities and poor health.
