Arthur Caleb Herrington, 88, passed away 12/8/17. Born in Graham, Georgia in 1929, he was the son of the late Robert A. and Hazel Herrington. He grew up in Jacksonville, FL and lived in New Jersey for 30 years. He married his high school sweetheart, Betty Butler, who passed away in 2005 after a marriage of 55 years. Art was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Hazel Herrington and a brother, Robert Duane Herrington. He is survived by two sons, Clinton Herrington (Denise) and Clifford Herrington (Amy); one granddaughter, Charli Ann Herrington, all live in New Jersey. Also survived by two sisters, Jacqueline Holton (Willis) of Jacksonville, FL, Faye Gooding (Earl) of Orange Park, FL. He has many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends including a wonderful friend, Joan Rowan all of whom he cherished.
Art attended Jacksonville public schools and graduated from Jacksonville University and Thomas Edison NJ State College, BS Degree. He proudly served six years USNR and active duty two years during the Korean War. Art had a career in Railroading. 20 years at the Jacksonville Terminal where he was the Manager of the Mechanical Department in the days where over one hundred passenger trains ran in and out of Jacksonville. In 1969, he was recruited by the MTA, New York City Transit Authority, retiring after 22 years as Assistant Chief Mechanical Officer and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach. Art loved to play golf, fishing, genealogy, reading books and traveling the world. He has been a member of the Masons over 50 years, Sons of the American Revolution, and Life member of the Eagle Scout Association. Art believed strongly in the values taught to him as a Boy Scout and served as an adult troop leader. Former member of Sawgrass Country Club. He was a long time member of the Southside Methodist Church and Reformed Church of Closter, NJ. Art was currently living the last 7 years at Cypress Village and was president of the Florida Life Care Resident Association.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Sunday, December 10th at Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 729 S. Edgewood Ave., Jacksonville, FL 32205. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Monday, December 11th at Edgewood Cemetery, 4519 Edgewood Dr., Jacksonville, FL 32219.
