Barbara M. Baxter, born Barbara Jean McAfee, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2025, after courageously facing a terminal illness. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Henry A. Baxter. She is survived by her two daughters, Denise Grant (Paul) and Erin Pegram (Zeke), and her five grandchildren: Melanie Grant, Melissa Erdman (Joe), Reilly Pegram, Michaela Grant, and Evan Pegram.
A woman of quiet strength and independence, Barbara took pride in living life on her own terms for as long as possible, with the love and support of her family helping her maintain that independence until her final days. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures; spending time at the beach where the sound of the ocean reminded her of her Maine roots, savoring seafood dishes, and people-watching whenever out and about. At home, she loved the comfort of her porch swing, her favorite chair and the companionship of her cat, Archie.
Barbara also treasured the relationships she built with the people around her. She valued her lifelong friendships, many lasting over 50 years, and delighted in the bonds she shared with her mailman, her phlebotomist, and her hairdresser, each bringing moments of connection and joy to her daily life. Her trips to the beauty salon to have her hair done were a highlight she always looked forward to and brought her a special kind of happiness.
Barbara will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Cemetery. A memorial service to honor her life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025 at 10am at Hardage-Giddens Greenlawn Funeral Home, 4300 Beach Blvd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience. To her family, she will always be remembered as a steady source of strength, a woman who embraced life’s simple pleasures, and someone who loved with her whole heart.
