Barbara T. Carter

Barbara was born in Tampa, Florida on September 25, 1929 to Elmer and Gladys Thomas. She attended local schools in Tampa where she graduated in 1948 from Hillsborough High School. Barbara met Curtis Carter in her junior year of high school whom she later married in 1954.

During Barbara’s young adult years she was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha (business women’s sorority) and the Garden Club in Tampa. She was a PTA member/officer during her children’s school years, member of Morocco Shrine Hospitality Unit, and the Morocco Shriner Sweethearts.

Barbara was also a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church where she belonged to a circle and occasionally would sing in the choir.

Barbara enjoyed traveling internationally and domestically with family and friends. She also enjoyed hosting family holiday meals or celebrations where she provided delicious meals. Barbara retired from the Duval County School Board in 1994 as an Accounts Payable clerk.

Barbara was predeceased by her parents Elmer and Gladys Thomas, her brothers Michael and Elmer (Sonny), and her husband of 62 years, Curtis Carter. Barbara leaves behind her children Pamela Carter Abis (Richard) and Curtis Emerson Carter, grandchildren Derek Abis (Samantha), Bryan Abis (Nicole), Connor Carter and Alexis Carter. She was a great grandmother to Austin Abis. She is also survived by many wonderful family members.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 24th, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Corey-Kerlin Funeral Home, 940 Cesery Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32211. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Following the memorial service, a committal service will be held at Chapel Hills Memory Gardens, 850 St. John's Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225.
