Barbara Jean Sloan

Mrs. Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Sloan, daughter of the late August B Harris and Audrey May Harris (both deceased) was born December 15, 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida. She attended the public schools of Duval County, most recently Paxon High School and later went on to graduate from Normandy Beauty College with a degree in Cosmetology. Barbara later managed and owned several hair salons in Jacksonville.

Barbara was married to the late William Sloan (deceased on November 10, 1989) for 11 years. Prior to this, she was wed to Russell W. Higginbotham for 24 years with whom she had four children. Mr Higginbotham preceded her in death on December 11, 2017.

Barbara was known for her generous spirit and vivacious personality as well as for being a true fashionista. She loved reading, gardening and supporting her Florida Gators, all of which led to her being loved by so many. She quietly departed this life on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Brooks Bartram Crossing Nursing Facility in Jacksonville, Florida, where the staff were exceptional throughout her seven years there.

Barbara was preceded in death by her siblings; Calvin Harris, Billy Harris and Ronnie Harris; sons, Michael Keith Higginbotham and Curtis Malcolm Higginbotham; as well as a grandson and great-grandson.

She is survived by her following siblings; Delores Robinson, Portia Ferguson, and Ted Harris. Additionally, her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her remaining children: Brenda K Coon of Ormond Beach, Florida (whose two children were always involved in her life) and Cheryl L Smallwood of Statesboro, Georgia (along with her husband, William and three daughters) as well as thirteen grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held on February 27, 2023; with visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 followed by the service delivered by Timmy Vickers from 11:00 to 12:00. It will be held at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel and Cemetery.
