Bruce Howard Smith, 77, long-time resident of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully on Monday, December 25, 2017. He was born October 18, 1940 in Columbus, Ohio to John and Dorothy (Spangler) Smith. In 1958, Bruce graduated from Watkins Memorial High School in Pataskala, Ohio where he set the school record in discus. He played the clarinet and was a member of the “Five Notes Band.” In 1966, Bruce graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Marketing and Economics and continued throwing discus as a Buckeye. He spent much of his career working for Levi Strauss & Co. and was a member of Mandarin United Methodist Church. Bruce married his best friend, Carolynn Joyce Farkas of Columbus, Ohio, on July 27, 1963. While sharing an enduring love for over 54 years, they enjoyed many travels, cherished dear friendships, and had a special bond with their beloved dog “Tutu.” Bruce fervently adored his wife and children. As an avid outdoorsman, Bruce had an affinity toward bass fishing, hunting, and golf. He especially enjoyed tending to his citrus trees and sharing each year’s abundant harvest. A favorite weekend pastime was cheering on the Ohio State Buckeyes in football. Bruce was best known for his quick wit and infectious smile; he always had a great joke to tell. As a kind friend to all, he will be deeply missed.
Bruce will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Carolynn; sons, Bryan (Leslie) and Gregory (Lisa); daughter, Stephanie; grandchildren, Spencer, Skye, and Sierra; sister, Jean (Bill) McCloud; numerous nieces and extended family. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, John and Dorothy and brother ,Jerome.
Family will receive loved ones at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Chapel, 4801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, Florida on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 12:00pm.
