Carl Daniel Garlington, 82, died peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Carl was born in Macon, Georgia, son of the late Susie May and Cecil Glenn Garlington. He was a graduate of Lanier High School, Macon, GA, and Georgia Tech. Following service in the United States Army, Carl worked as an engineer in Tampa and New Orleans, after which he earned his degree in Architecture at Louisiana State University. He spent a few years working in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and then relocated to his home of Jacksonville, Florida, where he began his career as a commercial and residential architect. Carl enjoyed working on a wide variety of commercial projects during his long career, but was especially proud of his work designing beautiful homes for families. Carl was an active member of the Rotary Club of West Jacksonville and the American Institute of Architects.
Carl was reported to have first smiled and laughed at an unusually early age, and those qualities remained his hallmark. Carl embraced life with uncurbed enthusiasm, and met all with his broad smile and frequent, easy laugh. He loved traveling the world with his wife Sallie, admiring the details and beauty in all types of architecture and art around him, and taking in the view over the river in Jacksonville and from the porch of his second home in the North Carolina mountains. Above all else, Carl loved and enjoyed his family and friends, who will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Sarah Savitz Garlington; his son Carl Daniel Garlington, Jr.; his daughter Elizabeth Garlington Scofield and son-in-law Charles Lanham Scofield, and adored grandchildren Sarah Burroughs Scofield and Charles Lanham Scofield, Jr. In addition to his immediate family, Carl is survived by his brother- and sister-in-law Edward and Becky Savitz, and a host of cherished nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Carl's life will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Saturday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service there will be a reception with the family in Leatherbury Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 4129 Oxford Avenue, Jacksonville FL, 32210; or to the Rotary Club of West Jacksonville, PO Box 382055, Jacksonville FL, 32238 (904-994-7355, [email protected]).
