Carmen M. Fishwick-Marin, age 97, was born on September 22, 1920 but registered with vital statistics on: October 15, 1920. Carmen was born into a prominent family in Puerto Rico, her family member, Luis Munoz-Marin was the first elected governor of Puerto Rico, journalist, politician, and statesman, regarded as the "Father of Modern Puerto Rico" and the "Architect of the Commonwealth. He was in office from January 1949 to January 1965.
Carmen was the oldest of six children born to Carlos Marin-Hernandez and Margarita Alemany-Oliver. Carmen's siblings include: Elba Marin-Carrero (deceased), Blanca Marin-Enriquez (deceased), Luiz Alemany-Marin, Gladys Marin-Mendoza, and Sylvia Alemany-Marin, all from Puerto Rico. Carmen moved from Puerto Rico to New York, met her future husband, John Henry Fishwick-Hughes. He had come back from serving his country with the US Navy Seabees. He earned his medical degree in dentistry, practicing for many years in both New York, Puerto Rico, and finally in Florida. Carmen was married to John for over 54 years, primarily as a dedicated housewife and devoted mother to her son, John Evan Fishwick-Hughes. Carmen loved to garden her favorite were orchids, cooking, a friend referring to her as the Latin American answer to Julia Childs.
Carmen was born with a birth defect in her heart that went undiagnosed until well into her 80's. Unfortunately, she did not seek out the surgery which could have helped, instead, opting for a pacemaker. Her son devoted his adult life, 28 years to take care of his father for 8 years and for 17 years his mum. He made selfless sacrifices in his own life to devout to his parents. Now, it is time for John to find his own independence. Carmen was born Catholic and her faith was important to her and instill the church's value into her son.
Carmen would like to give her love and thanks to the following people: Maribel Alemany-Gaudier, her cousin but referred to as her niece, and her family for all her love and support, which words cannot describe. Good friends who were very special: Helene Edwards, June Miehl, and Marylou Watson. Lastly to all the doctors, hospital staff at Baptist Medical Center, and Community Hospice Hadlow Center.
A graveside service will be on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 2:30pm at the Oaklawn Cemetery.
