Carol Miller Williams, 90, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and learning. She is now joyfully reunited with her beloved husband, Martin G. Williams, Jr., their youngest son, Kenny Williams, and Carol’s sister, Nancy Miller Sprague, who all preceded her in passing.
Born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, to Francis and Virginia Miller, Carol’s life was marked by curiosity, creativity, and compassion. She met her college sweetheart, Martin, at the University of Florida—where she proudly cheered for the Gators—and they married in October 1955. Together, they made their home in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, where they raised their family and built a life full of adventure and community.
Carol had a zest for life and a passion for sports, often found on the tennis court or playing basketball with her children. She was a natural explorer, delighting in family camping trips and even crafting campground amenities with her own hands. A gifted writer, Carol authored Beach Bountiful, a primer on the rich natural life of Southeastern beaches—from seashells and marine creatures to birds and coastal plants.
Her love of language led her back to school, where she earned a Master’s degree in English from Jacksonville University. She went on to inspire countless students as an English teacher at Stanton and Sandalwood High Schools and the Episcopal School of Jacksonville. She also coached the Episcopal “Brain Brawl” team to a championship victory—just one of many examples of her dedication to education and excellence.
In retirement, Carol and Martin built a mountain home in West Jefferson, North Carolina, where they became deeply involved in the local community. Her adventurous spirit and generous heart continued to shine through every chapter of her life.
Carol’s memory will be forever cherished by her children: Steve Williams (Rozie) of Jacksonville Beach; Diana Faison (Cam) of Charlotte, NC; and Kenny Williams (Candy) of Ponte Vedra Beach. Though Kenny passed away four years ago, he brought new joy to Carol’s life through stepchildren Leeann Stout Theiss (Brian) and their daughters, Della and Abby, as well as through Louie Stout.
To her grandchildren—Catie Van Loon (Marshall), Mary Cameron Brown (Parks), and David Williams (Olivia)—she was lovingly known as “Nanny” or “Grameen.” Her great-grandchildren—Lucy, Annie, and Wills Van Loon, and Ella Campbell Brown—brought her endless delight and new adventures in her later years.
Carol’s final companion, a spirited little terrier mix named Timmy, held a special place in her heart and could do no wrong in her eyes. Timmy brought joy and comfort to Carol's final years, embodying her enduring affection for animals.
Carol Miller Williams lived a life rich in love, learning, and laughter. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
A memorial service to honor Carol will be held on Saturday, September 13, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. A reception will follow in the church Christopher Lobby. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul’s by the Sea or to the Beaches Area Historical Society.
