Carroll Lamar Owens (Mar, Mohawk), departed this world to be with his Savior, Jesus Christ on March 22, 2022. Lamar was born on March 9, 1941 and was a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, Florida. Lamar was in the second graduating class of Englewood High School in 1959 and was a halfback on the first football team, as well as being the first Homecoming King of Englewood High School.
Upon graduating, Lamar enter the U.S. Air Force for 4 years and actively served in the Reserves for 5 years. During this time he attended Jones Business College, graduating with an Associate Degree in Business Administration under the GI Bill.
He joined the American Legion, Post 88 and was honored as Commander of the Year, Tri-County Commander for two terms and the 5th District Commander.
Lamar was a former member of St. Nicholas Park Christian Church for 72 years, where he served as an Elder, Worship Chairman and Chairman of the Board.
Lamar served as Worship Chairman and was a founding member of Crossroads Independent Christian Church. Lamar loved caring for shut-ins, singing and presiding at funeral services. He also loved Florida State University, golf and gardening.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth; parents, Edna and Howard Bissell; father Otis Owens (Hope); stepfathers, G.W. Johnson and Roscoe Wainwright; and stepson, Jay Chambers.
Lamar is survived by his loving wife, Martha, whom he adored; his stepsons, Jeff (Jennifer), Scott (Marcie), and Chuck along with 7 grandchildren; sister, LaVonne Volkmann (Jerry); step-brother, J.D. Johnson (Margie); and step-sister, Betty Hackworth (Herman); in addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation for Lamar will be held Monday, March 28, 2022 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hardage-Giddens, Chapel Hills Funeral Home, 850 St. Johns Bluff Road North, Jacksonville, FL 32225. A Celebration of Life with Reverend Mark Rogers presiding will immediately follow the viewing with the interment at Greenlawn Cemetery with Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mr. Owen’s memory to Crossroads Independent Christian Church.
