HOLLAND, Charles David, 94, of Jacksonville Beach, Florida passed away at home on Wednesday, April 1, 2020 surrounded by his family. Born on a Friday, July 31, 1925 in Wilmington, North Carolina, to the parents of Charles Pleasant Holland and Sally Holland. Charles joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in 1942 and served on the USS Massachusetts BB-59 during World War II. He went on to serve 32 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring in Jacksonville Beach, where they built their home in 1974.
Charles was married for 69 years to the love of his life, Caroline Louise Koester, who passed away on September 25, 2017. They met at a high school football game, where Caroline asked him to lean back on her legs to keep her warm.
They enjoyed their life at the beach and on their boat the "Sweet Caroline". The most important focus of his life was his family and his Lord.
Charles is survived by his son, Charles D. Holland "Chuck", Jr. (Celeste), son, Gerald D. Holland "Jerry" (Beverly), daughter, Jacquie Aslinger (Scott). Their first son passed months after being born, Charles Houston Holland in 1950.
He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Brian Holland, Joshua Holland (Andrea), Katie Holland Slucker (Brian), Caroline Aslinger, Carrie Aslinger, and Caitlin Aslinger; along with 8 great-grandchildren, Ethan Holland, Liam Holland, Jordan Broadnax, Henry Slucker, Olive Slucker, Jaxson Holland, Alexis Holland and future great-grandson, Steven.
Charles also leaves behind a brother Joe Holland (Doris), North Carolina. He was pre-deceased by his son Charles Houston Holland, parents Charles Pleasant and Sallie Congleton Holland, sisters Sara Smith, Eleanor Ruths and Jane Flowers. He leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well. Charles will be greatly missed by all who know and love him including his dog Scooby.
Charles believed that a man is a success, who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of the wise and the love of children; who has fulfilled his dreams and accomplished his missions; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by his hands, a kind word or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had to the Lord.
