Charles Elwyn Massey, 79, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in Middleburg, Florida. Born on July 8, 1947, in Columbus, Georgia, Charles lived a life marked by deep faith, remarkable strength, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved.
To know Charles was to love him. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 38 years, Marcia Ciano-Massey, who preceded him in death in 2013. He was also a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. His family was at the center of his life, and he demonstrated his love through his steadfast presence, quiet sacrifices, and willingness to place the needs of others before his own.
In many ways, Charles embodied the virtues of St. Joseph: humility, dedication, hard work, and faithfulness. His strength was found in his commitment to caring for those entrusted to him, particularly during life's most difficult moments. He understood that love was expressed most profoundly through actions, and his example of selflessness and perseverance will remain a lasting gift to his family. Those who knew him will remember not only his strength, but also the tremendous love behind it.
Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marcia Ciano-Massey; his son, Sean Massey Villeneuve; his grandson, Tyler Meador; his daughter-in-law, Brandy Meader; his parents, John and Kathyrn Massey; and his brothers, Oscar Massey and Jack Massey.
He is survived by his children, Anthony Massey and Marcia Massey-Vigue (William); his brothers, Jerry Massey, James Massey (Linda), and John T. Massey (Linda); and his sister-in-law, Glenda Massey. He also leaves behind eight beloved grandchildren: Victoria Massey, Chris Massey, Rev. Charles Bemis, Cameron Massey, Connor Bemis, Chancellor Bemis, Sean Villeneueve Jr., and Katie Villeneueve; six great-grandchildren; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
While his passing leaves a profound emptiness in the hearts of those who loved him, his family gives thanks to Almighty God for the gift of his life and the countless memories they will treasure. They find consolation in their Catholic faith, in the promise of the Resurrection, and in the hope of a joyful reunion with his beloved Marcia in the heavenly kingdom.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Luke Catholic Church in Middleburg, Florida, with Rev. Charles Bemis, his grandson, serving as the celebrant. The Funeral Mass will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
Burial with Military Honors will take place on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery, 553 AL-165, Fort Mitchell, AL 36856.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love, and support, particularly during the final weeks of Charles's life. Above all, the family humbly asks for continued prayers for the repose of his soul, entrusting him to the infinite mercy of God and the hope of eternal life.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
