Charles M. Stuart, Jr. passed away peacefully on August 10, 2021. Charlie was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in suburban Maryland, later living in Edgewater/Mayo, Maryland, and since 2002, in St. Johns, Florida.
He served in the US Navy Seabees and the Washington, D.C. government for 30 years, with the last 15 years as Special Events Coordinator for traffic and crowd control for all major events, including Presidential Inaugurations, parades, July 4th, international and Papal visits and disasters. He was the recipient of the D.C. government Distinguished Service Award. During this time, he also became an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police, D.C. Lodge #1. He also was a life member of the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad, having risen to the rank of Lieutenant.
He served as a president of both the Brookeville Lions Club and the Ancient City Coin Club of St. Augustine, Florida, and was also a member of the Greater Jacksonville Coin Club, Florida United Numismatists, and the American Numismatic Association. In his membership in the Episcopal Church in Maryland & Florida, he served as Junior Warden, Vestry person, and on numerous committees.
In 1968, he was diagnosed with melanoma cancer and told he had 2-6 months to live. By the grace and healing power of God, he overcame this disease and outlived the doctors who gave him the bad news. He greatly appreciated all the friends who gave their sick leave to him as he fought this disease. Charlie continued to lead an active life for the next half-century.
Charlie continued his gift of giving back as he served in the St. Andrew the Fisherman Church food pantry in Mayo, MD. This passion continued when he moved to Florida, where he became a member of the “Feed My Lambs” ministry of the Episcopal Church of Our Savior & St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Feed My Lambs supplies end-of-month food, support, and love directly to the homes of needy families in West St. Augustine, Florida.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Katey; sons, Chuck Stuart of West Point, VA, Doug (Cathleen) Stuart of Edgewater, MD; step-sons, Robert “Gray” Conley of Fayetteville, AR, Thomas “Ty” Conley III of Reno, NV; 8 grandchildren and other extended family members.
