Clara Josephine Echerer, a longtime resident of Jacksonville, Florida passed away on April 1, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Bayshore, Long Island, New York, Daughter of the late Aurora Chalinski Echerer and the late Lorenz Echerer. Upon graduating in 1954 from Sewanhaka High School in Floral Park, New York she attended Flower-Fifth Avenue School of Nursing in New York where she graduated as a registered nurse.
Her career started at Franklin General Hospital in Valley Strean, New York and spanned over four decades to bring her to Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville. Her roles there included Floor Nurse, Nursing Supervisor and RN Patient advocate/ Representative, a role that was created just for her. She worked there until 1994 when she retired and volunteered as a Parish Registered Nurse.
Clara was an active member at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church for 25 years and was in charge of the prayer chain and numerous circle groups. Besides her career and church membership, Clara enjoyed shelling and vacationing in Sanibel Island with family and friends, volunteering and playing the piano.
Clara is predeceased by her parents Aurora, and Lorenz Echerer, her brother Larry Echerer, his wife Brenda, her step-mother and best friend Grace R. Echerer, and her nephew Richard Echerer. Surviving is her brother Stephen Echerer and his wife Dianne, her cousin Brian Andreae and his wife Carolyn, and many devoted nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, step-cousins, friends, neighbors and her beloved church family at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Jacksonville.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3-5pm, at Hardage-Giddens Oaklawn Funeral Home, 4801 San Jose Blvd Jacksonville, Florida 32207. The funeral service will be Monday at 12 noon at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church 3976 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida 32207. Pastor Daniel Locke will officiate. A burial is to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. The reception will be held back at St. Marks after the graveside service.
