I would like to take a moment and introduce you to a man. A man that I have known most of my life. A man who helped shape the man who I am today. His name is Connie Monroe. I was introduced to Mr Monroe when I was 5 or 6 years old. My dad was dating his daughter. She would soon become my stepmother, the woman who raised me. Mr Monroe was no longer Mr Monroe, but Poppa. Poppa was a hell of a man. He was a Sgt. with the Jacksonville Sheriffs office. He also was a building contractor. Poppa built 2 houses for my family from the ground up. As a small boy, I was a professional "gofer" for my Poppa. I would gofer this and gofer that, whenever he needed something. I remember seeing him drive 16 penny nails with just two hits of his hammer. He had a handshake that could crush your hand. Poppa taught me how to drive his tractor when I was 10 years old. People were amused when a 5th grader was driving down Hood Rd on a Deutsch tractor. He taught me how not to kill a snake with a front end loader. He took down half his chain link fence with that bucket trying to smash a moccasin before he figured out it was a garden hose. Just for the record, the first time I saw it, I thought it was a moccasin,too! 

Poppa was a great gardener. I spent many summers picking beans, peas, corn, and okra. He would even let me take a lunch break to watch the Young and the Restless. I caught a million and one fish in his pond growing up. That is where I honed my ninja type fishing skills. You never wanted to fish in a boat with Poppa. If it was small enough he would turn it over. If it was big enough he would fall out. That man and water just did not mix. A quick story. Picture in your mind a snaky looking pond. Then triple it. The pond was located deep in the Georgia woods. It held big bullfrogs, big cotton mouths, and even bigger gators. It is 2:00 in the a.m. We have 2 jon boats in this pond. I was with dad. Poppa with a family friend. I'm still like 10 years old so this is an awesome adventure for me. Frog gigging that night was good. Both boats were loading up. Dad had already shot a few snakes. We had spotted old 1 eye gator. Old one eye was known as one eye cause he got too close to the boat one time. Dad popped him with the 22. We were in 12 ft jon boats. The gator was 16 feet. Anyway, one eye was lurking as always. My Poppa leaned over to stick a frog and flipped the boat. Both men went out of sight. We were shining our light trying to find them in the water and they never came up. Then we heard a sound on the bank. We shined the light on shore and there they were. Their fronts soaking wet but their backs as dry as a powder house. That is how you get out of the water fast my friends! 

Poppa loved me like I was his own 
flesh and blood. I can not ever remember him yelling at me. He was a man that I just didn't want to disappoint. He just commanded that kind of respect. 

I never ate a meal at his house that we didn't say the blessing. He knows God. 

Later in life, old age caught up to him. He became hard of hearing, the dementia also set in. But he always had a handshake like a bear. 

I received the call that I had been expecting.  I will miss him but I celebrate his life. I thank God for him. And I just smile, St Peter better be ready for that handshake.

Uncle Connie always held a special place in Mom's (Grace's) heart.  Though we never spent much time visiting him as children, he was very well known to us through Mom's stories. As a child, I remember Sgt Monroe as a wonderful cook during hunting season at my Grandfather's and Ray Boree's hunting camp in the Ocala Forest.  After joining the JSO, I was intrigued by the outstanding leadership Sgt Monroe came to pass on to all those who knew him.  Farewell my friend.
