Daniel Pratt Cherry, III, 75,died April 3, 2024, at Baptist South Hospital in Jacksonville,
Florida. He was born August 25, 1948, in Miami, Florida where he lived for 16 years before he
and his family moved to Brevard County, Florida. There he graduated from Merritt Island High
School.
After high school “Dan” joined the Army in 1969. Several years later he received his
Bachelor of Science in biology from Temple University. After earning a DO degree from
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr.Cherry joined the Army once again as a
Captain and physician at Ft. Dix, New Jersey.
This golf enthusiast moved to North Florida in 1982 where he practiced medicine as an
emergency room doctor. His medical career advanced as he became Medical Director for the
State of Florida prison system and ultimately Medical Director for a private prison corporation,
overseeing the medical division of over 40 prisons.
After receiving his pilot’s license he conducted many Angel Flights, serving those who
were experiencing medical difficulties.
Dan retired in 2017. His retirement years were filled with his passions: spending time
with his family; golfing and viewing the golf channel; watching football; and enjoying sunsets at
his home on the St. John’s River in St. Augustine, FL.
He will be remembered by family and friends as a compassionate, generous man,
always willing to help others.
This well respected doctor is survived by his son, Patrick Cherry, Philadelphia, PA.;
granddaughter Hannah Cherry, Philadelphia, PA; sister Joy Prescott, Coral Springs, FL; and
brother Kenneth (Melinda) Cherry, Tampa, FL. He was predeceased in death by his mother
Wilma Cherry and father Daniel P. Cherry, Jr.
The Cherry family extends heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support and love
extended to them by friends and the health care professionals at Baptist South Hospital.
A private memorial service for family and beloved friends will be held at a future date.
