Darryl Robert Hannon

April 18, 1943 to December 27, 2017

CDR (ret) Darryl Robert Hannon, USCG died peacefully in his home in Atlantic Beach, Florida on December 27, 2017 at the age of 74.

Darryl is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Tracey and Paul Martinez; and his grandson, Davis Martinez. He is preceded in death by his mother, Jean Hannon, of Neptune, NJ; and his former wife, Lynn L. Hannon of Savannah, GA.

Darryl was born on April 18, 1943 in Montclair, New Jersey. From the age of 10 years he attended Greer Boarding School in Hope Farm, New York, where he credited many fond memories and life-shaping experiences. After school, he joined the United States Coast Guard and began his 22 years of service starting in 1963, serving in various roles including a rescue helicopter pilot and eventually retiring at the rank of Commander in 1985. After retiring, Darryl obtained his degree in Computer Science in North Carolina, and that began his love of computing and coding. In the 90’s he moved back to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he volunteered as an aircraft restorer with the USS Lexington Museum. He stayed in Texas until 2012 when after a few bouts with cancer and heart disease, he moved to be closer to his daughter and family in Jacksonville, Florida. His favorite things to do included spending time with his family, reading and researching historical nonfiction and old time radio podcasts. He was a lifelong learner and enjoyed taking virtual courses offered on various topics.

A graveside service is scheduled on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 11:00am with military honors at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32218. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Darryl’s life. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Boys and Girls Club of N.E. Florida.
