On the evening of Father’s Day, June 15, 2014, Dr. David Wilson Cheshire passed away. He was comforted by family members and friends at Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville at the time of his passing. He was 86 years old. Born in Wilmington, North Carolina on December 30, 1927, he was the youngest of two sons of McKinley and Nina Hall Cheshire.
Our dad graduated from Johannes Guttenburg University (Germany) in 1961 with a Doctor of Medicine. He interned at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and completed his residency at Duval Medical Center in Jacksonville. He was a past president of both the Jacksonville Psychiatric Society and Florida Psychiatric Society. David was in private practice of 45 years and was a past Chief of Psychiatry at Memorial Medical Center, St. Augustine Psychiatric Center and Beaches Hospital. He was a medical director, consultant, expert medical advisor for the VA and numerous medical centers and hospitals. David loved life and his mission was to help others with an open heart. He touched lives that others had no faith in, and made a difference. The Dr. was always in and his motto was “keep on keeping on”.
David and his family resided on Beach Avenue in Atlantic Beach since 1968. Summers were enjoyed at Red Top Farm in Hendersonville, North Carolina. His loves were his family, friendships, his cars, race horses and a love of the beach and mountains. He was known for always being there for his family, his friends and his patients. He is survived by his wife (and high school sweetheart) of 65 years, Kathleen Moak Cheshire; sons, David Winston Cheshire (Vera) and Christopher Paul Cheshire (Sheri); daughters, Elizabeth Ann Cheshire and Stephanie Cheshire; grandchildren, Erin and Michael Ringler, Olivia Cates, McKinley and Katherine Cheshire; sister-in-law, Margret Brennan Cheshire and nephews McKinley and Eric Cheshire.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 23, 2014 at four o’clock in the afternoon at Palms Presbyterian Church 3410 3rd St., Jacksonville Beach, FL with an inurnment at a later date in North Carolina.
