Don was born on September 4, 1950, and was born and raised in Jacksonville, a city he proudly called home throughout his life.
He shared 53 years of marriage with his devoted wife, Sharon. Together, they built a life, raised a family, weathered life’s challenges, and created more than five decades of memories. Their marriage was a true testament to commitment, perseverance, and lasting love.
Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; his three children, Phillip (Prairie), Kelly, and Bridget (Jason); and his six grandchildren, Brandon, Colby, Malia, Bella, Justin, and Eli. He is also survived by his brothers, Steve (Tracy) and Mickey (Joyce); his sisters, Sandy and Evonne; his nephew, Brian; and his niece, Lindsey (Mike), along with their three daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Burt (Nell) and Margaret Stevens (Pierce), and his brother, Michael.
Don spent more than 50 years working in the automobile business, a career he genuinely loved. He had a relentless work ethic that was second to none. He took great pride in the work he did and the relationships he formed throughout the years.
He had a passion for deep-sea fishing, racquetball, music concerts, and watching sports. He also enjoyed going out to dinner on the weekends and treasured that time spent gathering with family and friends. He had an unforgettable laugh and was a master at giving people he cared about a hard time.
Don also had a deep love for animals, especially his dogs and cat. He never hesitated to feed or care for any animal that crossed his path, from ducks and stray cats to rabbits and the deer that wandered behind their property. His kindness toward animals was another reflection of his generous heart.
Don was stubborn, outspoken, and had a fierce intensity about how things should be at times, but he was also deeply loved. His family will remember his humor, his strength, his generosity, and the quiet ways he showed how much they meant to him.
His greatest legacy will not be measured by the number of years he worked or the things he owned, but by the family he provided for, the people he helped, and the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Don’s family invites all who knew and loved him to join them in celebrating his life, sharing memories, and honoring a man whose presence will never be forgotten.
Don's family would also like to request that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his memory to the Animal Care and Protective Services of Jacksonville.
