Doris Mae (Henrich) Bordiere, age 91 of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 24, 2025. She was born on September 12,1933 on a farm near Geddes, South Dakota. Doris was the middle of six children born to Della Mae (Rose) and Romain Valentine Henrich and spent much of her childhood on the Henrich family farm near Struble, Iowa.
She was very fond of telling her children and grandchildren about the one room schoolhouse she attended and how she and her sisters and brother carried baked potatoes in their pockets to keep their hands warm while herding the cows out to pasture before the long walk to school… in the snow!
At 16, she entered the convent in Chicago, and spent the next three years in their cloistered community as Sister Romaine. During lent, she remembered eating lentils a lot. In her last year and before her final set of vows, she left the convent and lived briefly with her sister Mary Francis in Iowa, before moving to Alaska with her parents and siblings Joan, Peter and Polly.
It was in Alaska that she met her husband, Sebastian (Doc) Bordiere, on a blind date set up by her sister Joan. Little sister Polly was often invited to tag along on their dates. Doc was in the Air Force stationed in Anchorage during the Korean War. After a whirlwind romance, Doc proposed and whisked her off to his hometown, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Soon after, Doc and Doris welcomed three daughters to their family, Stephanie, Sandy and Becky. In 1967, Doc’s job transferred the family to Vienna, Virginia and then in 1970, to Jacksonville, Florida. Doris was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom until the mid-70s, when she got a job at the Duval County School Board, and then the IRS, where she was in charge of the computers at the call center.
In 1981, Doc and Doris were transferred to Chicago, Illinois, where Doris continued working for the IRS. In 1983 Doc passed away suddenly. Heartbroken, and wanting to be near family and friends, Doris moved back to Jacksonville.
Doris retired from the IRS in 1998, but didn’t slow down. Doris volunteered her time and energy to many different organizations — The St Francis Soup Kitchen, where she proudly worked in the kitchen stirring huge pots of soup, City Rescue Mission and St. Vincent DePaul.
In 2021, Doris was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Dementia and moved into Assisted Living, and then finally to Memory Care, where she was was cared for by a group of dedicated, compassionate care-givers including incredible support from Community Hospice.
A devout Catholic her entire life, Doris was truly an inspiration to others. She was loved by everyone who met her and always had a smile on her face. She will be deeply missed.
Doris is survived by her daughters Stephanie Henry (Steve), Sandy Weber (Bill) and Becky Augsburger (John, deceased). Grandchildren Shannon Trull (Justin), Jami Gardner, Kristen Van Deusen (Chris), Kimberly Scales (Chris), Will Weber (Sarah), Kaylee Delicato (Cameron), Addie Augsburger, Rosie Augsburger and Liam Augsburger. Great Grandchildren Sean and Callie Trull, Braden Scales, Clay and Jack Gardner, Thor and Abby Van Deusen. Sisters Joan Jackson, Mary Francis Campbell, and Polly Desoimer (Bob).
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Alzheimer’s Research, St Vincent de Paul Society or Community Hospice in Doris’ name.
