Dorothy Warren Willard, 93, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2014. A native of Jacksonville, she began dancing at a very early age. She danced in Vaudeville, and was in a traveling Broadway musical show called “Jumbo” in New York and Columbia South America. In 1941 she volunteered at an Aircraft warning center. Dorothy joined the Army Air force in 1942, serving proudly during WWII. After the war, she married L.G. Willard and they returned to Jacksonville where they lived together for 69 wonderful years. She started a career teaching dance, and in 1951 she opened her own dance studio, The Dorothy Warren Willard School of Dancing in Lakeshore. She happily taught dance to hundreds of children until her retirement in 1984. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her two granddaughters in between taking cruises, bowling, and playing golf. She was truly a good person, loved telling stories of her dancing days and she is now in a better place. She will be missed by her family and many friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved husband L.G. Willard; son Michael Willard (Vilma); granddaughters Vanessa Willard-Cox (Jon), and Amanda Willard-Delgado (Xavier).
Dorothy’s family would like to thank her caregiver Reshema Sanders and the caring staff of Heartland Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to Jacksonville Ballet Theatre, 10131 Atlantic Blvd, Jacksonville, FL, 32225
