

Dorothy Pierce Yard, 95 years old, died on October 3, 2012. Dorothy was born to George Pierce and Pearl Slingerland in 1916 in Detroit, Mi., as an only child. The family moved to northern New Jersey, where they had family nearby. Dorothy married Lawrence Yard of New Jersey on April 30, 1938. In 1945, Dorothy gave birth to their only child, Lorraine. In 1953, the family moved to Jacksonville, FL., with the transfer of Lawrence’s job at Prudential. In Jacksonville, Dorothy was active at local Episcopal churches and San Jose Country Club and was an avid golfer and bridge player. She also spend time with her grandchildren, Ryan and Todd Smith. In her later years, Dorothy was a regular volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital and an active member at All Saints Episcopal Church. Dorothy had an indomitable spirit and lived the life she wanted. She loved company and brought joy to her family and friends. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her grandson Todd. She is survived by her cousin Lenore Nagle of Sussex, NJ., her daughter Lorraine Smith (Kenneth), grandson Ryan Smith (Andrea), and great-grandchildren, Bella and Finn. A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 6, at 10 AM at Oaklawn Cemetery, with Rev. Gerald Alexander officiating. Memorial donations may be made to All Saints Episcopal Church or Community Hospice NE FL
