A truly remarkable lady of almost 95, Edna Stokes Shuemake, passed away early Sunday morning, May 3, 2015, in Jacksonville Florida. The world is a lesser place without her presence, but a much better place because of her long, loving, and significant life. Born in North Carolina, she made Florida her home early in life where she raised her three children, all of whom are deeply grateful, feel richly blessed by her, and were with her in her final days.
A talented businesswoman, she started and/or was co-owner of multiple (6) types of businesses with her signature company being a hair styling salon that was a place of friendship, fellowship, and beauty from 1946 to 2014. Always, her clients in all businesses first-and-foremost were also her friends. Overcoming a challenging childhood herself, her assistance of others was broad and deep. She always reached out to those in need whether for funds to continue their educations, get a job, or to help them better themselves in some way.
Edna was a devout Baptist by faith, which she modeled with her tireless kindnesses and her allegiance to the two great commandments (Matthew 22:36-39) in her work and relationships.
She was predeceased by her husband and father of her children, Clyde Parker Stokes, Sr.; husband, Luther Coleman Shuemake; and stepson, Luther (Buddy) Shuemake, Jr. Her 40 years of care and love for Buddy, a special child, inspired all and is legendary. They traveled the world together.
She is survived by her three children: Irene Stokes Fordham, Clyda Stokes Rent (George), and Clyde Parker Stokes, Jr. (Jane). She was blessed with six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
The visitation will be held May 5, 2015 from 6-8pm at The Edgewood Chapel of Hardage Giddens. Graveside Services will be May 6, 2015, 10:30am at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Hardage Giddens Funeral Home 729 S. Edgewood Ave 32205.
