Elaine Furman (née Sheitelman), 87, of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on May 4. She was predeceased by her brother, Jerome Sheitelman. Elaine is survived by her sister, Harriet Sheitelman; her children, Deborah Miller, Naomi (Allen) Kipp, and David (Dana) Furman; and her beloved grandchildren, Erin (Drew) Sekelsky, Sarah (Brandon) Miller, Jacob and Jonah Kipp, and Meagan and Connor Furman.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Elaine was raised in a large, close-knit extended family and remained in New Jersey until 1975, then moving to Birmingham, AL, and finally settling in Jacksonville, Florida in 1984, where she made her home for the remainder of her life. She was a trailblazer in her profession, working as a pharmacist at a time when few women entered the field, and she carried that same determination and strength into every aspect of her life.
Elaine was a beloved sister, mother, and “Bubbe,” whose greatest joy came from her family. She cherished time spent together—whether in everyday moments or on shared travels—and created lasting memories that will be treasured for generations.
She had a deep and enduring passion for Judaism, Yiddish language and culture, and Israel, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Her curiosity and knowledge enriched not only her own life but also the lives of those around her.
Elaine gave generously of her time to others. She volunteered with the Learn to Read program for many years, helping to change the lives of many through literacy, worked in the Jacksonville Jewish Center’s library, and gave time to the JFCS food bank, supporting those in need in her community. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah and ensured that her children were as well. Elaine was an ardent supporter of Israel, women’s rights, animal rights, and the environment.
Elaine’s warmth, strength, and devotion to family and community will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Contributions in Elaine’s memory may be made to the Jewish National Fund, the Jacksonville Jewish Center, Planned Parenthood, or the charity of your choice.
A Graveside Service will be held at New Center Memorial Park Cemetery, 200 E 43rd Street, 43rd and Liberty, Jacksonville, FL 32208, US, on May 6, 2026, from 2:00pm
