Elvie May Boykin Thomas, went home to be with her Lord and Savoir on May 21, 2016 surrounded by her devoted family and the love and support of countless friends and loved ones. Our “Little Lady” was very special, touching many lives and will be greatly missed.
She was born June 1, 1922 in Meridian MS to the late Jonah Joshua & Carrie L. Smith Boykin. In 1945, she came to Jacksonville by train to accept a position as an Assistant Librarian at NAS and began attending Riverside Bapt. Church where she met and married Robert Donald Thomas Sr. “Don” (also known as “R.D.”) on May 27, 1950. They shared 31 years together and she remained faithful to him the rest of her life.
She was a devoted mother who worked both in the home and held many occupations, including keypunch, library assistant, bookkeeper, substitute teacher, and daycare teacher.
Her mother taught her about God and she accepted Jesus Christ on Mother’s Day in 1932. Over the years, she served Him faithfully as a Sunday School teacher, nursery worker, WMU leader, and in numerous other ways at Wesconnett Bapt. and then for the past 27 years at Venetia Terrace Bapt. Church where she was greatly loved.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, her sister Carrie Oleta Boykin Jones who lived to be 101, her brother Jodie Arthur Boykin, and her husband.
She is survived by her 3 children, “Bobby” Robert D Thomas Jr. (Cheryle), “Randy” David R Thomas (Karen), Marilyn A Strickland (Dwane); her 5 grandchildren, Corey Thomas, Aric Thomas (Cassie), Carrie Rittner (Philip), Maggie Thomas, Daniel Strickland; her great-grandson, Alex Rittner; 3 nieces and 1 nephew.
Arrangements entrusted to Hardage Giddens 5753 Blanding Blvd Jacksonville Fl 32244, where a public visitation will be held Wednesday May 25th from 7-9pm. A funeral service will be held at Venetia Terrace Baptist Church 5284 118th St Jax. Fl 32244 at 11:00am May 26, followed by interment at Riverside Memorial Park, 7242 Normandy Blvd. Jax 32205.
